ELPS Academy on Texas Gateway

TEA has released the ELPS Academy on the Texas Gateway.

The ELPS Academy is designed to assist participants in understanding how the English Language Proficiency Standards (ELPS) provide cross-curricular second language acquisition essential knowledge and skills for listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Participants will also examine a common framework to follow when working with English language learners in content area classrooms. Participants who successfully complete all modules and the assessment will earn 3 continuing professional education (CPE) credits.

This year, in addition to dynamic and engaging sessions for teachers of ELLs, we will also be featuring a unique lens for Bilingual/ESL administrators!

For teachers, the schedule will include sessions on effective ELL engagement strategies, literacy skills, interactive notebooks, anchor charts to drive instruction, and cross linguistic strategies.

For administrators, sessions will also showcase effective systems for dynamic growth with
regard to ELLs – systems put into place by teachers, administrators, and central office staff.

Bilingual Director’s Meeting-This Wednesday!

Last call to register for this Thursday’s Bilingual Director’s Meeting!

This session will be comprised of a new format, with several speakers and informational resources for administrators.

-We will be introducing a new comprehensive training for asylee/refugee needs, which will be taking place at Region 13 on April 27, 2016.  This full-day professional development session will equip you with tools, techniques and instructional strategies to adequately meet the needs of your newcomer students.

– Get up to date information on hiring new teachers, new parent modules, and the upcoming Sheltered Instruction Conference and the Sheltered Instruction Cohort for the 2016-2017 academic year.

-Additionally, you will get the chance to preview the revised ESL Academy to be rolled out this summer!

Bilingual Director’s Meeting on April 13, 2016

Please join us on Wednesday, April 13, for the last Bilingual Director’s Meeting of the academic year! This session will be comprised of a new format, with several speakers and informational resources for administrators. We will be introducing a new comprehensive training for asylee/refugee needs, which will be taking place at Region 13 on April 27, 2016.  This full-day professional development session will equip you with tools, techniques and instructional strategies to adequately meet the needs of your newcomer students.

Michael Griffith from Breakthrough Austin will be speaking about working with middle and high school students who will be first generation college students. Additionally, Teresa Granillo from Con Mi Madre will discuss working with Latina girls and their mothers to get them on track for college. 

The Bilingual/ESL team will be bringing you information on best practices when hiring new teachers, information on new parent modules, and the upcoming Sheltered Instruction Conference and the Sheltered Instruction Cohort for the 2016-2017 academic year. Additionally, you will get the chance to preview the revised ESL Academy to be rolled out this summer!

Summer professional development opportunities as well as ESL instructional products will also be discussed.

Call for Presenters: Sheltered Instruction Conference 2016

Region 13 ESC will be hosting the second Sheltered Instruction Conference on June 9, 2016! This conference will be a platform for elementary and secondary educators to learn more about strategies that meet the needs of English Language Learners (ELLs). The application is now available for interested presenters to submit a proposal.

SI Conference

We are accepting a variety of proposals that focus on best practices for ELLs. Sessions may focus on, but are not limited to:

– Engaging Student Interaction
– Academic Vocabulary
– Literacy in the Content Classroom
– Working with Beginners/Newcomers
– Differentiated Instruction
– Activating Background/Prior Knowledge
– Linguistic Accommodations for ELLs
– Structured Reading/Writing/Speaking Activities
