PD Opportunity: Literacy through the Content Area in a Bilingual Classroom

In a bilingual classroom setting, the literacy skills of reading and writing are often overlooked in the core content areas outside of the English Language Arts.

This training will guide teachers in ensuring that key literacy skills are integrated into the science, social studies, and math lessons. We will draw from Kathy Escamilla’s Biliteracy from the Start: Literacy Squared in Action for insight on transitioning from Spanish to English.

If you serve students as any of the following, this training is for you!

  • Bilingual teachers
  • ESL Teachers
  • Instructional Coaches

Sheltered Instruction – September 21 from 9-4pm

This session will dive into the English Language Proficiency Standards (ELPS) in order to help teachers plan their instruction for English language learners.  If you are an ESL teacher or a core content teacher with ELLs in your classroom, then Sheltered Instruction knowledge is necessary for you to learn the skills to make content comprehensible and develop academic language for your students. Come learn how to make your classroom a language rich environment that ensures students are acquiring English while learning your content.  We will focus on strategies to increase students reading proficiency and writing skills across all content areas.

Strategies for Building Success in Dual Language Classrooms – September 28 from 9-12pm

If you teach in a One-Way or Two-Way Dual Language classroom then this is the training for you! Join us in discovering ways to transform your classroom by enhancing participation and increasing learning in both languages. Some of the topics that will be covered include: cross-content planning, cooperative learning, and academic vocabulary just to name a few. This training will be filled with tools, techniques, and instructional strategies you can use to facilitate learning and meet the diverse needs of your students.

Secondary ESL Teacher Support – September 29 from 9-12pm

The Secondary ESL Teacher Support series is for teachers at middle and high schools who are teaching ESOL 1, ESOL 2, ESL/ELA, or an ESL Reading course.

These will be collaborative sessions where information about ESL students and classes will be shared, as well as time to work with like-minded teachers serving this population of students.  This is an opportunity to delve into the TEKS and ELPS, and plan appropriate lessons to ensure we are meeting the needs of our students!

Bring your Year-at-Glance documents, TEKS, and materials used in your class needed to lesson plan.
