We are seeking teachers who are interested in teaching others about the terrific strategies, tools, and plans they use in their classroom!

Beat the Heat 2017 will be a two day learning extravaganza! On Wednesday, June 21st we will have full day sessions for participants’ extended learning. On Thursday, June 22nd we will have a short keynote presentation and then a series of 90 minute breakout sessions with presentations by the best and brightest from here in Region 13. This means you!

Please consider providing a breakout presentation for this year’s Beat the Heat conference.

  • Schedule– From the main schedule select sessions to create your personal schedule (My Schedule)
  • Speakers– Browse through our speakers and select sessions provided by your favorites!
  • Handouts–Links to the handouts will be found in the session descriptions. We will be posting handouts as they are received from the presenters. While we won’t be printing all the handouts for all participants.  We will be providing handouts to session participants

Our app is available on three different platforms.

FYI! The iPhone and Android apps will sync across platforms and devices.  For example, if you have an Android phone and an iPad, you can download the app to both devices.  You create a profile/login on one device.  When you open the app on the other device, you will use the login/profile you created to access your information.

The WebApp works only online and is device specific.  It will not sync your information across platforms, browsers or devices.

Be good to yourself!  Dr. Kristin Neff  will discuss self-compassion.  Learn practical strategies for maintaining emotional well-being in a stressful work environment.   Find out more about Dr. Neff on her Self-Compassion website.

Friday, July 1

Jesse Trocino – My Life on the Range
Jesse will describe the path he took to achieve his dream of becoming a cowboy.  He comes to us from Project SPEAK, a training program for people with developmental disabilities who want to become public speakers.

Sarah Barnes – Meredith & Me
Sarah will speak on the joys, frustrations and sorrows of raising a daughter with intellectual disabilities.   For the Austin American Statesman, she writes a column titled “A Different Road” about raising Meredith. Read more about Sarah and Meredith on her website.

Picture Exchange Communication System to Speech Generating Devices

Is your learner ready to transition to a Speech Generating Device? Do you need help selecting a device and/or preparing your learner for the transition? This training will help get your questions answered!

This full-day workshop will describe procedures for analyzing a learner’s current PECS skills to determine candidacy for transitioning to a Speech Generating Device (SGD). The course will also cover choosing a device, teaching functional use of the device, and why we must teach the basic principles of communication to our learner first to ensure positive outcomes are achieved.
